The will to work?

Travelling conditions have been challenging in most of the UK since the turn of the year with snow and ice, but rarely impossible.

Our overall attendance rate has been 95% and would have been 100% if employees had not been let down by Brits supplying transport.

One client reported a 40% attendance amongst its direct British workforce travelling from similar locations.

If you have been let down talk to us about long term solutions.

It comes as no surprise that the £ is under pressure

Zloty graph

Regular readers will have come to understand the impact of the exchange rate on the attractiveness of coming to work in the UK.

The last 6 months has seen a general downward drift and workers now rate the UK 4th behind Norway, Holland and Germany as the country of preference.
Which way will the exchange rate go in 2010? It will impact on availability especially the £v Euro rate.

2010 has opened with skills shortages in particular areas

The care sector is characterised by opportunities and challenges following the December budget. The early birds should be OK but for those looking at traditional recruitment routes are likely to have a problem later on.

Trade skills, especially welders are like gold dust internationally and rates have risen sharply. We are getting demand from the Middle East and Holland in particular.
Butchery skills remain in demand that will grow in the second half.

Catering users find Brits unreliable, inflexible and that they don’t want to work what they consider anti social hours. This is a social and political British problem as the work is largely unskilled and suitable for most people currently unemployed.
