Dear Julian

Our newsletters usually cover general topics.

However as business confidence is gradually returning I thought I'd illustrate what we do to ensure we get the right people in the right place and make it easy for our clients.

10 reasons why Skills Provision is different

The top line is

You concentrate on what you do best – running your business
We concentrate on what we do best - supplying and managing people for your business as long term partners.

What this means is

1. No surprises
We'll work with you to get a detailed job description together that reflects what you need with enough detail to ensure that anybody arriving to take up a position brings no surprises.

2. ROI on training investment
We will structure the package, with you, to reduce the likelihood of transitory labour so you get a return on your investment in training.

3. Improved cost control
With our outsourcing service we charge one flat rate on all hours worked.
Therefore you have full visibility of your hourly costs for any unexpected business opportunity without having to worry about additional labour costs.

4. Lower risk of failure
This is far lower if people are brought in from Eastern Europe to fill positions. They are more committed as they can’t immediately access state support and know if they fail they’ll have to return home.
Those on the temporary employment register are there for a reason, usually negative. They are generally poor quality workers looking for a tick in the box to get government assistance.

5. Hitting the ground running
We will advise you on any necessary in house preparations that need to be made so our people can hit the ground running.

6. Welfare - we can take care of it
All welfare issues, such as bank accounts, national insurance appointments, registering with a Doctor, obtaining Government registration etc are handled by us if you use our popular outsourcing route.

7. Accommodation and transport
Accommodation and transport are discussed up front and we are flexible on the arrangements that are necessary.

8. Thorough vetting
All candidates are vetted with two references being taken and an optional police check can be included.

9. Telephone interviews
If the positions require good English or are technical you can arrange to interview by phone.

10. Flexible approach
We will remain as much or as little involved in the day to day activities as you wish. Usually you manage them at work, we manage their welfare out of work.

  A Case Study

A long term client, hit by the recession and looking to cut costs decided to revert to direct recruitment for new requirements. This was because  unemployment in the geographic areas in which they operate was high and the skill levels required were not too demanding.

It is always sad to see a longstanding client of many years on the wane but their theoretical rationale was impeccable.

So, what happened?

They tried it for 6 weeks but experienced:

  Absenteeism
•  Poor productivity
•  Inflexibility
  Insubordination
•  Poor quality workmanship

After 6 weeks they reverted to Skills Provision because our outsourced formula was seen to be highly cost effective when many of the issues highlighted above were eliminated.

Our no quibble replacement policy, means if we make a supply mistake we put it right, quickly and efficiently.

UK Border Agency closes off Bulgarian applications - we assess the impact

  Breaking News
The UK Border Agency suddenly rejects multiple application from Bulgaria (and probably Romania) on basis that applicants must demonstrate they have sufficient funds in a bank account to support themselves for a year should they lose their job.

This will halt all entrants from these countries. It will be inflationary and labour costs will rise and the impact on the care and hospitality sectors will be severe. The move is clearly political.

What a weird world we live in! Contradictory signals

Doom and gloom all around us in the UK if you read the press.

• Double dip recession a probability
• Government finances in a mess
• Unemployment likely to rise
• An up coming budget
• Election by June

But for the first time in two years we are seeing our enquiries rise.

What we don’t know, is it the result of genuine market improvements or a reaction to press comments like the BBC programme “The day all the immigrants went home”. That was the best bit of free advertising this business could have asked for.

Now where are our enquiries coming from?

It isn’t the really big boys who will have no truck with agencies, seeing them as an unnecessary expense.
It is all from the middle market to entrepreneurially owned private businesses that will drag us out of recession.

To help we are extending our discount coupon for a further three months for new clients using our out sourced route. Talk through your recruitment needs with me personally at no cost and let’s see if we can structure a winning offering.

Legislative changes from next month

The sick note is being replaced by a fit note.

It won’t make a jot of difference unless management change their attitude and more to the point contracts of employment.

Far reaching changes in employment legislation are on the way to “improve” the system. This will increase bureaucracy and costs, engage lawyers and accountants in avoidance strategies when what is needed is simplification, less paperwork so that costs can be lowered all round to make the UK more competitive. Plain crazy but that is Euroland for you.

Exchange rates: Another month, another story

Zloty graph

Turbulence is the life blood of the international money/foreign exchange markets.

They don’t care which way it moves providing it isn’t static because in a stable market it is hard to make money.

Don’t get to carried away by the scaremongering about the falling £. It hasn’t dropped like a stone because other international situations are just as bad.

China has a debt crisis coming up in 2011, Japan has continuing deflation, Euroland has ongoing structural issues. If we get the uncertainty of a hung parliament, fiscal concerns about the UK’s ability to refinance (AAA status under threat) then the £ will fall.

What it means in terms of labour mobility is that the UK is no less attractive than any other European country to work in and demand to come to the UK remains high as indicated by our available workers list.

Overseas employers are fishing in the UK for talent, because we are “cheap” to hire. For example through our sister operation European Recruitment Agency we are currently seeking 20 English teachers for Saudi Arabia you can see the details here
